The shooter game "Contra" is getting a mobile treatment and game developer Konami has teamed up with publisher Tencent for the smartphone release. What will the game be like when played on a mobile device? The companies behind it has given gamers a peek in a new teaser.
Tencent posted the trailer for the new "Contra" on YouTube to show what gamers can expect from the classic arcade game. Avid fans of the game should remember what it's like and based on the clips, the mobile version looks just as exciting and addictive albeit with better graphics.
Gameplay remains similar and there's also a boss to beat at the end of round, as well as a player-versus-player mode that's reminiscent of the 80s game. But it appears "Contra" mobile is paced faster and more challenging than the older version, which should also appeal to those who will be playing this game for the first time.
Take a look at the "Contra" mobile teaser in the video below:
The big difference about the "Contra" mobile game from its predecessors is the microtransaction feature that's typically to any games running on the platform. While Konami and Tencent have yet to confirm the specifics, it looks like gamers this time around might be able to improve their weapons and avatar's appearance by purchasing add-ons for the mobile device, per Engadget. However, the content will be first and foremost free to download and it might also offer an IAP, per Droid Gamers.
The release of "Contra" on mobile was first revealed in November with the China market getting first dibs, per Polygon. It will be available for both Android and IOS users. It is not yet known whether the game will also be released internationally.
"Contra" first came out in 1987 and became a hit once it was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Check out how kids of today react to playing a classic "Contra" game in this feature below:
