Negan's Epic Introduction
Negan's introduction to "The Walking Dead" comes with much controversy, given that the character's entrance to the comic book the show was based on included bashing the brains of a fan favorite using Lucille. Now, fans of the hit AMC program are wondering whether the events of Negan's entrance will be the same as in the comic book, or if it will be changed.
"The pat answer is he's unlike anybody we've seen on 'The Walking Dead,' and further, I think he's unlike anyone we've seen," showrunner Scott Gimple said of Negan in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "He is a singular character, I think, of the last 10 to 20 years of popular culture. I find him to be a fascinating character."
Gimple continued, "Through another lens, he's not a bad guy at all in the comic. He does some horrible things, but our people do some horrible things. He is, though, this unrepentant a-hole. He is somebody who is the ultimate bully."
The showrunner doesn't think Negan is a psychopath, but he is "charismatic" and a "force of nature" with "this bizarre sort of empathy to him," EW reported. Gimple said that fans will be scared of Negan, but the character can definitely make them laugh as well.
As for whether the show will follow the comic book's Negan introduction, Gimple didn't give a straight answer. He said that the TV adaptation doesn't always follow the comic book to heart, but it still succeeds in delivering horror and shock to viewers.
"Sometimes we have things from the book that people who read the comics maybe see coming a mile away, and we try to adjust that so that we can give them the same feeling they had when reading the book, which might have been shock or surprise or fear, any of those things. It might be wildly different, but it's all to get the same sort of feelings that you got when you read them. So will it be different? Absolutely. Will it be the same thing? Absolutely," Gimple explained to EW.
AMC also released a trailer for the Season 6 finale on April 3, Sunday, at 9/8c. The special episode will run for 90 minutes. Watch the teaser here.
