Is Politically Correct Culture Destroying Higher Education?

Trigger warnings, safe spaces, emotional trauma - these are some words used by America's politically correct masses, especially among university students. Politically correct culture is a brand of social justice that stands for censorship for fear that it might incite adverse reactions from a certain affected population. When universities mollycoddle their students' demands and complaints, a lot of resources go to waste which can compromise higher education.

Politically Correct Student Complaints Becoming Rampant?

The latest example of student mollycoddling was at Emory University. Students protested over pro-Donald Trump president chalk writings in the campus and those who were in "fear" and "unsafe" supported the rally.

Emory University President James Wagner responded to the clamor of students for appropriating political materials inside the campus. Wagner wrote an email, via The Emory Wheel, that he will make "immediate refinements" in the school's policies to accommodate the complaints of the students. He adds that he will do the same to create "a formal process to institutionalize identification, review and [the] addressing of social justice opportunities and issues and a commitment to an annual retreat to renew our efforts."

Media Outlets Dub Campus Politically Correct Culture 'Ridiculous'

The instances where US universities give in to student protests and complaints have been dubbed as ridiculous by media outlets. There are even who go so far to say that their behavior is childish. USA Today reports that politically correct culture only adds to the problems of higher education in terms of decreased public support and enrollment.

Additionally, indulgence of this kind of social justice makes it seem that higher education is a luxury not worthy of society's resources. Some think that money that goes to the institutions could be better used for needy school children and increasing the pension payments of retired government workers.

President Obama Agrees Political Correctness Downplays Learning

When asked about his thoughts on reducing the funding for colleges with political preferences, President Barack Obama said that he does not agree about coddling and protecting college students from various points of views. He says that political correctness will encourage lack of perspectives and arguments which can stifle vital learning process.

"I've got to tell you, I don't agree with that either. I don't agree that you, when you become students at colleges, have to be coddled and protected from different points of views," he said as reported by The Hill.
