Sore Throat can be Cured by Aspirin

A new study claims that aspirin is the best cure for sore throat.

Researchers from the University of Cardiff Common Cold Center involved in the study said that a couple of tablets, dissolved in water and gargled, not swallowed reduced pain brought about by sore throat in just two hours. The effect of aspirin also lasted for a maximum of six hours. They also suggest that inhaling products that contain menthol was also useful. "It provides relief from nasal congestion by causing a cool sensation in the nose and also relieves the symptoms of sore throat and cough by a local anesthetic action," said Professor Ron Eccles, lead author of the study.

Experts from Waikato University in New Zealand also suggest that some type of honey may be effective in fighting throat infections as it naturally contains hydroge peroxide which has antibacterial properties. Honey given to children before bedtime does a much better job at suppressing night-time coughs compared to over-the-counter cough syrups, researchers from the University of Maryland claimed. Acupuncture in the ear was also deemed effective. Eccles said: "It may be a placebo effect but it still works."

Sore throat is a common condition that normally lasts between three to seven days. However, in some cases where the pain is severe, other forms of medication may also be administered, according to the National Health Service (NHS). This includes painkillers and self-care tips like avoiding foods and drinks that are extremely hot because this can irritate the throat. Antibiotics may also be prescribed if your sore throat is severe and if it makes you susceptible to infection.
