Facing a must-win situation in the quest to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, on Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio, the U.S. soccer team responded with a victory over Guatemala. In FIFA 2016 season, the latest victory over Guatemala put the U.S. team in a good position to advance. Since 2001, the U.S. soccer team is 27-0-2 at home in qualifying.
Geoff Cameron, Clint Dempsey, Joy Altidore and Graham Zusi scored for the U.S. The U.S. soccer team controlled the majority of the action despite a banner flying overhead, calling to fire coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
According to USA Today, Clint Dempsey was the first to score 12 minutes in. Dempsey scored his 49th international goal, only eight goals behind the American record of Landon Donovan. After the game, Dempsey said that for him, the American soccer team has "showed a lot of heart" and "a lot of character by dealing with a pressure situation."
Following a dismal 2-0 loss against Guatemala City on Friday, the U.S. soccer team's head coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, shifted two others into their more usual spots and made five lineup changes. Zusi was added to the roster on Sunday and Cameron doubled the U.S. lead in the 35th minute. Just 20 seconds into the second half, Cameron was able to add a goal and in minute 89 Altidore capped the scoring.
