Hajima Isayama's "Attack on Titan" remains one of the internationally acclaimed Japanese comics. In line with that, the recent news and updates revealed that the series is set to gain more Western fame and glory.
Last year, Kodansha Comics had already announced an "Attack on Titan" anthology at NYCC. However, Kodansha revealed at Wondercon this weekend new details about the series. It stands out that Kodansha has finally decided to team up with renowned comic book artists as well as writers to present the new anthology, which features a number of short stories that delve into Isayama's world of titans and apocalyptic building swinging.
As reported on Gizmodo, this anthology by Western writers and artists includes stories ranging from the time before the first arc of the manga to a side story that takes place at Atlanta's Dragon Con. Yet it is the project's range of talents that makes this truly exciting. Big names in the industry are part of this project, including Snyder, Phil Jiminez, Gail Simone, Babs Tarr, and Brenden Fletcher, the current Batgirl team of Cameron Stewart, Paolo Rivera, Evan Dorkin, Faith writer Jody Houser, and the list goes on. There is indeed a wealth of talent behind this project.
In an article on Inverse, Kodansha expressed its goal of sparking interest in the previously uninterested parties more familiar with the writers and western contributors' art styles over the typical enlarged eyes and overly exaggerated expressions prevalent in Japanese manga art. Taking into account Isayama's appreciation for western comic books, he was very much thrilled and happy to let American talents use his characters and world in creating the collection of various stories.
In its classic manga format, "Attack on Titan" has more than 50 million copies in print on top of a couple of video games and an ongoing animated adaption as well as the two-part live action movie. Both fans and critics have praised the series for its story, atmosphere, and unpredictability.
