The war on obesity reached new heights. Recent date revealed that babies as young as seven months are already consuming too much sugar.
Health experts were alarmed upon knowing that children as young as five months old are being given junk food and soda which are high in sugar content. Obesity experts are making a plea to young mothers to provide their children with proper nutrition as they face an alarming number of obesity threats among infants, according to She Knows.
Professor Pinki Sahota the lead author of the study stated that young mothers then to feed their babies junk food, which is inappropriate for their age. To make matters even more concerning is the fact that mothers tend to feed their 5-month-old babies soda, sugary drinks and even potato chips.
"The fact that children are having this kind of food at such an early age is concerning enough. But parents are establishing bad eating habits for life," Sahota said. "Schools have a role, then midwives, health visitors and local authorities, but they need to be supported by the food industry. They could reformulate some of their high-fat and high sugar products."
Children as young as six months have the capability to develop obesity, Mirror added. Study leader Dr. Allison Smego, from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, explained that children who are prone developing obesity should be monitored at a young age as they have a lifetime risk of developing weight problems.
"It's not currently recommended to measure BMI in children under the age of two," Smego told the Mirror. "But we say it should be because we now know it predicts obesity risk later.
Obesity reached an alarming rate as sugary drinks and fat filled meals are readily available at a cheap cost. one researched by Imperial College London revealed that in a span of 40 years (1975 and 2014) the obesity rate worldwide skyrocketed from 105 million to 641 million.
