Teenagers are more susceptible to mental health problems compared to other age groups. Though every teenager goes through emotional struggles, parents should be keen to spot signs, so as to prevent the situation from evolving into a mental health problem. According to research, only 20 percent of children with mental health problems are properly diagnosed.
Teenagers are more prone to depression, mood swings and anxiety compared to other age group as they face several life transitions at the same time. Facing several conflicts and unexpected changes in a short period of time can be overwhelming, making them more prone to mental health problems.
The Inquirer suggested that several experts agree to the fact that it is normal for teenagers to have mood swings and mental health problems. Though having them go through a series of emotional struggles may be normal for them, it makes it hard for parents to spot if it is something serious or not.
"Only 20 percent of children with mental disorders are identified and receive necessary mental health services. As a society, we have to do a lot better than that," Kenser said. "Teen mental health issues are 'family affairs' - they can have a devastating effect on families, and it's essential that the entire family is involved in working through them."
Though most signs are subtle, it is important to take note of it. One of the most common symptoms among teen with mental health issues is their erratic change of behavior. Their drastic loss of interest in school and poor school performance is also something that should be taken seriously.
Health added that it is important to take note of early signs of mental health when it comes to teenagers as it can be a leeway for chronic depression. Other signs that were mentioned include change in physical health appearance, alcohol/drug abuse and sudden change of peers.
