The 2016 Miami Open men's final on Sunday had Novak Djokovic playing against Kei Nishikori in the fight for the title.
Before the game, not many tennis experts gave a chance to Nishikori in achieving victory over the 11-time Grand Slam champion, according to the online publication Tennis. For Nishikori, the task on Sunday has been like trying to climb the tennis version of Mount Everest.
Nishikori's opponent, Serbian Novak Djokovic, has won 55 of his last 57 matches at Master 1000 events and has lost just one time in Miami since 2010. Djokovic is going for a record 28th title while Nishikori is trying for his first title at this level.
Nishikori said that he thinks Djokovic doesn't give away any free points, is very patient and doesn't have much weakness. He added that, in trying to beat Djokovic, he will need to focus almost every point, serve and return well.
Nishikori was able to beat the world No. 1 Djokovic before, most recently in four sets in the 2014 U.S. Open semifinals. Since then Djokovic is 5-0 against Nishikori. The last five sets they've played were won by Djokovic with scores of 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
The last match between Djokovic and Nishikori before the Miami Open final came two months ago at the Australian Open. Nishikori could attack as well as Djokovic, but he was unable to defend the court to the extent that Djokovic was. Novak Djokovic won after a comprehensive backcourt beating.
Kei Nishikori could win in Miami Open final. Djokovic hasn't been at his best and Nishikori had the shots. But even not in his top shape, Djokovic hasn't lost a set.
On Sunday, at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida, Novak Djokovic continued his dominance at the Miami Open. With a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kei Nishikori he also made significant ATP World Tour history, wining his sixth Miami Open crown, according to The Guardian.
