Ohio School Teacher Suspended For Racist Remarks on Black Student

A school in Ohio suspended a teacher after he racially attacked a black student.

Gil Voigt, the Fairfield Freshman School teacher, passed a racist comment at a black student earlier this month. The student said that he would like to become the U.S. president in future. To this, Voigt said the country "doesn't need another black president."

The Fairfield board of education immediately suspended Voigt without pay, this week, the Associated Press reported.

According to The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News, board president Dan Murray, said that the suspension is the first step in the termination process.

"He was talking to some students and said some things that were racially insensitive. We take diversity in our school district very seriously with tolerance of people who are different. We just felt this teacher had crossed the line," Murray said.

Superintendent Paul Otten said that Voigt had made similar racist remarks for which he was given verbal warning. The school officials said that Voigt received a verbal warning in 2008 for a racial comment and a written notice last month to follow the school curriculum.

However, Voigt said that he was misquoted by the school officials. According to Otten, he can appeal against the school decision within 10 days of the formal notice by the school borad.

Reuters recently reported three California University students were accused of taunting their black roommate with references of 'slavery.'
