NBC's "The Blacklist" is getting a spinoff and casting is underway. The still-untitled TV series will pick off from the mother show in an episode airing Thursday, May 12. Production is carefully laying the groundwork and setting the tone for the new show.
Deadline reports that "The Blacklist" spinoff will begin rolling as a backdoor pilot in Season 3 Episode 22 from a story involving the character of Matias Solomon (Edi Gathegi). Solomon was tasked to go after Reddington (James Spader) and has recurred on "The Blacklist" at least five times.
Who else are in "The Blacklist" spinoff?
Solomon will encounter Susan "Scottie" Halsted (Famke Janssen) in "The Blacklist" spinoff and it is hinted that she has ties with Tom (Ryan Eggold). But while NBC is keeping her identity under wraps, Scottie might actually be Tom's mom, per The Hollywood Reporter. In essence, her character is similar to Reddington from the original series.
"The Blacklist" fans already know Tom since he's a part of the mother show. However, as his character will be moving forward to the spinoff with a bigger storyline, he will be like the Liz (Megan Boone) of the series. Tawny Cypress has also been cast in the show as the Nez Rowan, yet her character description is unavailable at this point, per TV Series Finale.
"The Blacklist" spinoff team behind-the-scenes
The same team behind "The Blacklist" - Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath - are going to handle the development of the spinoff with Michael Dinner tasked to direct the backdoor pilot. Reports have yet to confirm if they will continue to handle the new show moving forward. Bokenkamp and Eisendrath will have their hands full as "The Blacklist" already received a Season 4 renewal.
"The Blacklist" was NBC's top-rating new program when it launched in 2013. It remains one of the network's stronger performing shows three years running.
