The philosophy termed as "attachment parenting" is said to be forcing mothers to go back to their homes instead of having regular jobs. Since it was introduced, many claimed that it teaches a practice for mothers to devote their time to taking care of their babies and breastfeed them.
The Nation explained that parents, especially moms, are now encouraged to embrace attachment parenting which equates to breastfeeding until the age of 3, carrying your baby for long periods every day and letting them sleep with you on the same bed. It was added that this may encourage the old mentality that women should stay at homes while men work.
It was added in the same report that the proponents of this philosophy, Dr. Bill Sears and wife Martha, are suggesting that men should not have jobs so that they can spend more time with their kids. They claim that this is based on the teaching of the Bible where the father is the head who works and the mother is someone who stays at home to take care of children.
"He even suggests that couples borrow money from their parents to enable the wife to stay home," the report said referring to Bill. The Sears couple also took the example of Mary also stayed at home to breastfeed Jesus.
According to NYMag, the philosophy they introduced has now become a controversial topic since then because of the issues on "parental insecurity and coddling." It added that experts, even OB Gyne doctor Amy Tuteur, have questions on this parenting philosophy.
"Attachment requires only the 'good enough' mother," said Tuteur in the NYMag report. "Attachment theorists never studied infant feeding, baby wearing or the family bed because they found that it wasn't specific parenting behaviors that led to attachment, but rather the child's sense that his or her needs were being met."
