Consuming too much donut can make men infertile, according to the Daily Mail.
Ciaran and his wife Jennifer have been trying for a baby for a year without success, so they consulted with their general practitioner. They expected to be told that the problem had to do with Jennifer having polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that was directly associated with having abnormal hormone levels that can affect fertility. However, just make sure that the diagnosis were accurate, Ciaran's GP decided to test him as well.
"I remember being told there wouldn't be any problems," said Ciaran, 27. I don't think it really sank in at that point. I just said, right then, okay. It was only later that I sat down and thought about it and realized the severity of the situation. I am not ashamed to say that I've cried over it. And I have wondered if I will ever be a dad. It's difficult because there are things that can be done for Jennifer's condition, but nothing that can be done for me."
Ciaran's sperm count showed to be very low, making him subfertile. "They couldn't find a reason and have said it's just one of those things. It does seem strange because I come from a big family - I'm from a family of four, and my mom and dad came from reasonably big families too. Like most men, when I was at university I probably drank more than I should have and I've wondered if that could have had an impact. Some studies link high fat-foods like donuts as a possible cause of infertility.
"Several studies have emerged in the past 18 months showing men who consume a high-fat diet are more likely to have a low sperm count," says Professer Richard Sharpe from Edinburgh University.
