Those who are old enough to have played the original "Legend of Zelda" on the Nintendo Entertainment System will know that back then, the game was a totally epic adventure. Good thing that now, as the "Legend of Zelda" celebrates its 30th anniversary, the game can be played once more - but now in isometric 3D!
The 3D recreation of the classic game, titled "The Legend of Zelda 30-Year Tribute," is an open-source version of the game that is built in WebGL, reports The Verge. The game is playable on both web and mobile browsers.
Unlike the classic game, "The Legend of Zelda 30-Year Tribute) is rendered in 'voxels' (not pixels), giving the game a "2.5D" look and feel. You can imagine it as a crossover: the original classic made the "Minecraft" way.
The loving tribute was created by two programmers, Scott Lininger and Mike Magee, who reportedly were inspired to create the 3D version because they loved playing it as kids. The game isn't complete just yet - some of the dungeons aren't built yet, and it's quite tricky to determine if enemies are going to hit you because of the change in plane - but it does feature the original's 8-bit soundtrack. Pretty neat.
Proud creators Lininger and Magee took to Facebook to share the project with everyone, reports Cnet.
"This is a fan created tribute made for fun and always totally FREE to play," they wrote.
"["The Legend of Zelda 30-Year Tribute"] can be played either on your computer using a keyboard or on your smart device with touchscreen controls (please 'add to Home Screen' for best experience)," they add. "We know it's not a 100 percent finished overworld but we are working on it. We would love your feedback while we're developing."
Interested in playing the 3D game yourself? Click here to try the game for yourself. Cnet notes, though, that it worked well in Chrome, but not so well for Internet Explorer, but you can still try. Because of this loving recreation, old and new players alike will enjoy a classic game, with a modern twist.
