In the battle for thin laptops, names like Apple, Razer and Lenovo are leading with the iconic MacBook Air, Razer Blade Stealth and Lenovo LaVie. However, a new contender has appeared, and this one is even thinner than those known to be thin.
HP's new 13-inch Spectre is a 10.4mm-thick laptop that runs on Windows 10, reports Cnet. It's as thin as a AAA battery, notes Mashable, but is not just a thin piece of tech that will make you worry that it'll break easily.
The new 13-inch Spectre's chassis is made of two different materials: aluminum for the hood, while the bottom part is made of carbon fiber. HP says this is to make for a light chassis that maintains rigidity and toughness. That might sound like the new laptop will look like War Machine, but worry not - it has classy looks that make it fit for jewelry stores: the whole laptop is covered in an "Ash Silver" color, and has copper or gold-colored hinges that really stand out, as well as the new HP logo that has a premium feel.
With a thin body like that, HP was able to beautifully cram in a lot of powerful innards: a current-gen Core i5 or Core i7 Processor (ditching the fan-less but weaker Core M series), 8GB of RAM and 512GB Solid-State Drive. Don't worry about the cooling system: HP says it installed what is called "Hyperbaric cooling," a cooling system that draws air in and through the laptop, in contrast to the usual hot-air-out cooling systems of other laptops.
The 13.3-inch IPS screen only has one configuration: a 1,920 x 1,080 full HD resolution display. There's no 4K option, nor is there a touchscreen variant. The Chiclet-style keyboard is excellent, on the other hand, when compared to other thin laptops. It features Bang & Olufsen speakers as well.
The 13-inch Spectre has three USB Type-C ports (two of which support Thunderbolt 3 speeds) and one 3.5mm headphone jack. All three USB ports can interchange roles: charging the laptop, transferring data, and other functions.
Thinking about all these content, one has to wonder where the batteries are stored. For that, HP has installed four flat cells, distributed evenly inside the laptop and giving it up to 9 hours and 45 minutes of battery life. This makes for a truly thin but full-pledged system.
The 13-inch HP Spectre is available starting April 25 on HP.com and BestBuy.com, and starting on May 29 at BestBuy Stores. It's priced starting at $1,249.99.
