A mother who sued doctors after she lost both of her legs in surgery has been awarded $62 million by a New York City jury, according NY Post.
Stacey Gallette, 30, claims she was supposed to be in and out of hospital in one day following straightforward gynecological surgery but was left a double amputee after doctors allegedly left her with an infection that turned into gangrene and spread to both her feet. Legal papers confirmed that she was left in a comatose state for three weeks at Winthrop University Hospital. "When I woke up, I was in ICU and I asked my family what I was doing there. They told me about my food which got amputated."
Mrs. Galette confirmed that she has endured endless pain as a result of her amputation. She also suffered from permanent partial hearing loss. In 2010, she filed the lawsuit at Brooklyn Supreme Court against Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island along with three doctors, seeking unspecified damages. On Friday, it has been confirmed that she was awarded with $58 million for pain and suffering and another $4 million for special damages.
A spokesman of the hospital explained their side saying that doctors in charge of Stacey's case diagnosed the complication quickly and treated it as best they could but the condition deteriorated quickly. He said their efforts saver her life but left her disabled. "I'm just happy justice was served," Stacey said. "I'm not able to walk. The jury did the right thing by rendering a verdict that will take care of this young lady for the rest of her life," Stacey's lawyer, Ira Newman said.
