Dental Health Of Babies: How To Care For Kids' Teeth

A baby's dental health should always be given proper attention by parents to avoid unnecessary trips to the dentist in the future. Experts claim that setting a good example to kids when it comes to brushing and cleaning their teeth should be done by parents.

According to Times Live, making sure that the teeth of children are in good shape should be a priority for parents. Experts on dental health also said that moms and dads should maintain clean and healthy teeth because they can pass on diseases to their children

"Statistically, mothers with poor oral health are at risk for premature and underweight births," said Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry professor William Wathen. He noted that bacteria and other germs can be easily acquired by kids from their parents.

To make sure that a child's teeth are healthy, dentists mentioned in the Times Live report that they should have a checkup as soon as they turn six months. Experts claim that appointments from then on should be set every six months.

It was also suggested to clean a baby's teeth using a soft cloth or a finger every after meal. The gums of children should also be massaged to help them adjust when chewing objects.

As for the toothpaste, Baby Centre recommends those with lower fluoride content especially for 3-year-old kids and below. It explained that sharing the toothpaste that the entire family uses is not a good idea.

Parents are also warned of the effects of sugar to a baby's teeth. "The main cause of tooth decay is sugar. It's not just the amount of sugar that can be harmful, but how often it's eaten or drunk throughout the day," Baby Centre explained.

It noted that children should only be allowed to eat food with low sugar content. This will help them maintain strong and clean teeth even when they grow up.
