"Sherlock" Season 4 may see the return of Moriarty, as fans have been speculating on Andrew Scott's reprisal following a statement from executive producers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.
"Sherlock series four - here we go again... Ghosts of the past are rising in their lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake," the showrunners said, according to Den of Geek.
This made many fans wonder whether Moriarty was one of the ghosts being mentioned in the showrunners' statements. Apart from Moriarty's possible return in "Sherlock" Season 4, rumors are rife that the upcoming season will serve as its series finale.
During the same interview, Gatiss and Moffat shared that "Sherlock" Season 4 is "a story about to reach its climax." Many fans assumed that this was a hint on the show's series finale, especially because of its cast's hectic schedule, particularly that of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's.
Inquisitr, however, notes on the possibility that "Sherlock" may continue its storyline through the big screens, as "The Abominable Bride" proved to be a success in its 2015 release. The said movie was released in over 20 countries with 1.7 million viewers in China.
The executive producers' statements may also be taken as another hint that "Sherlock" Season 4 may feature something truly extraordinary, which might explain the reason for it reaching its climax. However, everything remains a speculation until the show returns to the small screens in January 2017.
