Children Experiment on 'New Drug' By Snorting Smarties Candies

Middle school children are picking up a new habit wherein they snort the candie Smarties as an illegal drug, Guardian LV reports.

Side effects from snorting and smoking Smarties like illegal drugs include lung irritation, infections, allergic reactions, scarring of the nasal passages, as well as a nasal maggot infestation. What students normally do is they ground the candy into a powder and then snort it using a straw. This mimics how some other types of illegal drugs are taken by powdering pills in order to be snorted or smoked.

One school situated in Rhode Island Portsmouth has been having a serious problem with kids partaking in this dangerous fad. As a result, school officials have been reaching out to parents of students by sending letters and alerting them about these possible dangerous acts. There have been past reports of children rolling dollar bills in order to snort or smoke powdered Smarties. In 2007, a video posted of YouTube featured kids challenging each other to snort or smoke Smarties.

As of late, 15 children from a middle school in New York City were caught snorting the alleged 'new drug'. The acts themselves are very much similar to that of snorting heroin, cocaine and prescription pills. Authorities are warning parents to alert themselves of instances wherein their children may be suddenly interested in purchasing or even hoarding Smarties candies as well as of buying similar tools normally used for snorting drugs. Authorities are currently keeping a close watch of children participating in such an act.
