Parents As Role Models: 4 Habits You Should Stop Doing In Front Of Your Kids

Many parents try to nurture values, implement rules and discipline their kids through words and lengthy verbal lectures. However, most kids learn by observing their parents' actions instead of their words. Therefore, parents need to act as good role models in order to instill the right values and manners on their kids.

"Parents serve as role models not only through direct interactions with their children, but through the examples they set with their attitude and behavior within the family and in the outside world," Livestrong explains. Men's Health shared some of the habits you should stop doing in front of your kids in order to become effective parents and role models.

1. Telling Lies

You and your partner cannot become effective role models if your kids see you telling lies to others. When your child hears you telling white lies to your spouse, neighbour and employer in order to save your skin, your child will also develop a habit of lying his way out of sticky situations.

2. Spending Too Much Time On Gadgets

Do you want to see your kids spend less time on their electronic gadgets and more time outdoors and being physically active? If you do, then your kids need to see you first doing the same.

3. Displaying Bad Temper

Do you allow your kids to see you lose your temper when your spouse makes mistakes or when you encounter bad drivers and poor customer service? If your answer is yes, then it is time to make a change. Parents need to learn how to manage their anger and stay calm even when things are going rough.

4. Insulting Others

Parents who are good role models do not insult other people, especially when their kids are around. Your sarcastic, offensive and mean-spirited comments might soon influence your children's minds. They might also try using those words of "wisdom" in school which can get them into a lot of trouble with their classmates and teachers.
