40 Percent Of Parents Derive Knowledge On Modern Technology Usage From Their Children: Study

There is no age limit to learning new things. Research shows that parents are learning new technology from children who are more at ease with the new gadgets.

Researchers from the University Diego Portales, Chile, in their recent study about the influence of children on their parents talk about how they play a role in educating parents about the usage of mobiles, computers, internet, social networking and likewise. According to the researchers, 40 percent of the parents learn about modern technology from their children knowingly or unknowingly.

The researchers have based their findings on the results derived after surveying 242 pairs of parents and children and extensively interviewing 14 sets.

The instances of learning were more common among parents from low income groups, especially the mothers. Here the children were more at ease with the technology and acted as their parents' tutors

"Women and poor people usually lag behind in the adoption and usage of technology," said Correa, in a press release. "Many times, they do not have the means to acquire new technologies but, most importantly, they are less likely to have the knowledge, skills, perceived competence, and positive attitudes toward digital media."

In fact, Correa has stressed on the fact that the government and schools need to take more initiatives to enhance new digital knowledge in children. The parents also need to know about the ill effects of technology usages like fake online identities, child porn, excessive internet addiction and cyber bullying, which will help them to understand their children better and guide them accordingly.

The findings have been published in the latest issue of Journal of Communication.
