While some parents are open to having a girl or boy as a child, others are not. In fact, according to a new report, sex-selection abortion is a global problem. Parents have a preference when it comes to the gender of their child.
Parents Prefer Boys
The Globe and Mail reported that couples in Canada practice prenatal sex selection where they abort female fetuses, in favor of male children. Per the report, two related studies learned that the ratio of boy to girls born to immigrants from India is higher than expected.
"This suggests that many of the abortions may have involved female fetuses. And that's why the sex ratio at the third birth is distorted," said Marcelo Urquia, lead researcher of both studies.
Urquia believes that some immigrants hold more value on the life of boys than girls. He is concerned that females in some immigrant communities are also at a disadvantage in other stages of their lives like infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Highlight of the Study
According to Life News, in China, men outnumber females by about 33 million. Also, the Census data from 2000 discovered that the third births in families of foreign-born Chinese, Indians and Korean in the U.S. who already had two daughters is 151 boys to 100 girls, which another proof that parents favor boys than girls. The skewed sex ratio at birth is 115.88 in 2014.
Sex-selective abortion is widespread globally. In fact, in the last two decades, the sex ratio at birth of Asian-Pacific populations in the U.S. and U.K. are unbalanced in favor of boys. This very alarming change is associated to sex-selective abortion that targets girls.
Government Should Act
Per Newsweek, Ann Higgins claimed that sex-selection abortion is a global problem even in America. In view of this, David Prentice is calling the legislators who condemned discrimination to act accordingly and enact a law to prohibit this practice.
