Fans have been waiting for the sequel of the blockbuster film "Avatar" for over six years already. Unfortunately, "Avatar 2" is still in the dark. James Cameron keeps on pushing it back. What's the future of "Avatar 2?"
"Avatar 2" Slated for Release in 2018
According to Variety, the anticipated "Avatar 2" will hit the big screens in 2018. Initially, "Avatar 2" was scheduled for 2017 release but was pushed back. In fact, there were rumors that James Cameron doesn't want to compete with "Star Wars: Episode 8" that is also coming up at the same time.
As Movie News Guide puts it, it is unlikely for Walt Disney Picture to compete "Star Wars: Episode 8" and "Avatar 2" against each other. Both films are sequels to the highest-grossing films "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Avatar," respectively.
Four Sequels On The Way
Meanwhile, as the production pushes "Avatar 2" back, there's good news for fans. The sequels have been expanded to four. Initially, there were only three "Avatar" sequels, but another one is added in the series.
Per Variety, James Cameron only envisioned two sequels, "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3." But after meeting four screenwriters, artists and designers, he realized that he had too much input for just two films. After that, three "Avatar" sequels were reported and now, it is four.
"So far, what I am seeing in pure imagination is far beyond the first film," Cameron said. "We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga." According to James Cameron, only selective few have seen the initial concepts and they were "speechless" with what they saw.
Cameron added that the "Avatar" sequels are designed for theaters and big screens first. The other three "Avatar" sequels are set for release in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
"The next time I see you will be on Pandora," Cameron teases referring to the mythical land he created in his blockbuster film "Avatar."
