Disney made history when it introduced on its network its first ever same sex couple Sunday The lesbian duo, who appeared on the show Good Luck Charlie, was reportedly not a decision the company made lightly.
"This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors," a spokesperson told TV Guide back in the summer.
"Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."
The couple, Susan and Cheryl, are the mothers of a child who becomes friends with Charlie.
"I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation. They control...so much of what kids think! Life isn't bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING," former Disney star Miley Cyrus tweeted back when the move was first announced.
Not everyone was equally as thrilled, however, including the group One Million Moms, known for its attempted boycott of JC Penney after the store hired Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman.
"Just because something may be legal or because some are choosing a lifestyle doesn't make it morally correct," the group wrote in a statement. "Disney should stick to entertaining instead of pushing an agenda. Disney decided to be politically correct versus providing family-friendly programming."
The statement continued: "Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to same-sex marriage on a network that is designed for kids. This is the last place a parent would expect their children to be confronted with topics that are too complicated for them to understand."
