The grim reminder of terror attack three years ago which caused her a leg does not stop 32-year-old Adrianne Haslet-Davis from again joining this year's Boston Marathon. The professional ballroom dancer said she is prepared to run a full marathon using her new prosthetic leg.
According to Daily Mail, Davis was one of the bystanders during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings that ended the life of three peopled and injured 264 others. She said in earlier interviews that she was thrown by the impact of the explosion and noticed later on that she was missing her left foot and ankle.
Doctors decided to amputate her left leg below the knee because of the serious injuries she sustained. Davis was devastated with losing her leg since it was a key part of her dancing. But she was determined to rise from adversity and pushed herself to walk again with the help of technology.
Now, she is prepared to complete the 26.2 miles of the Boston Marathon even if she is walking on one prosthetic leg. Prosthetist Brian Heckathorn, as per Daily Mail, has been a big help to her training.
"I'll make sure she is doing well," Heckathorn said in a CBS interview. "It may be as little as a high five as she's going by, or it may be a time to stop and do some changes, but we're going to make sure we have a clinic there for her on that day."
For her part, Davis is also excited to take on the challenge this coming Monday. She told Glamour that she will just let her "blade" (prosthetic leg) do the jive for her during the marathon. Davis said she finds it easier to use her new leg to run than to dance.
She, however, expressed concerns that she may get hurt during the race and get skin injuries to her limb and hip flexor. "I have a team of people who are on hand to help with any injuries and of course, the countless volunteers at medical tents along the course," Davis added.
