'Aquaman' News and Updates: James Wan Will Make Aquaman A Total Badass

Fans had a brief glimpse on how Aquaman will turn out to be in 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice." Renowned director, James Wan will turn around the Aquaman character in his upcoming solo movie in 2018.

Most people would remember Aquaman as someone who communicates fish language and who has an adorable octopus sidekick. He was a water guy with the dolphins made famous by Super Friends. He mostly had the impression of being the underdog in the DC Universe. However, Wan is ready to make Aquaman a total badass superhero, MTV reports.

Helming "Saw" and "The Conjuring," Wan is now tasked by Warner Bros. to direct the upcoming "Aquaman" that is set to open in theaters on July 27, 2018. Before his solo movie, Aquaman will appear in Justice League Part One, reports Cinema Blend. While promoting his movie Conjuring 2, Wan talks with MTV about how he takes on the challenge of turning around the Aquaman character.

"A big part of it was me telling them what potential I saw in this character," Wan told MTV News during CinemaCon last April 14. "As we all know, Aquaman is somewhat the butt of the joke in the superhero world. There's something cool about that. I love the idea of being the underdog, coming in with a take on this underdog character and completely blow people's expectations away. Like, 'Oh, you thought he was going to be a wimpy character? No no no.' It's going to be so cool."

In fact, Aquaman will be portrayed by the badass Khal Drogo from the Games of Thrones, Jason Momoa. If this isn't reason enough, the fact that he's the ruler of an entire underwater universe should make him formidable enough.

Over the years, Aquaman's character has been redefined. The King of Atlantis has grown a beard, lost his shirt and replaced his arm with a massive hook all in the effort to make him cooler, Cinema Blend reports. More so, he also developed a serious personality. However, in Geoff Johns' recent take on Aquaman, he introduced a whole new set of elements into the origin story, expanding both the mythology and his powers. You may expect to see some of them in the new Aquaman movie.
