The Hispanic community is known for being devout Catholics and it is odd that there are only a few of them enrolled at Catholic schools.
You would easily assume that Catholic schools would have mostly Latino students enrolled given their religious upbringing. But it is quite a surprise that almost none of them are even seen in these schools. Here are the reasons why:
1. Slow In Response: NBC News reported that Catholic schools are less aware of the growing population of the Hispanic community who practice Catholicism. This is crucial for the expansion of the Catholic Church in America and the schools are apparently not focused on that. Statistics said that 40 percent of the people in the U.S. are Latinos and the majority of them are Catholics. Unfortunately, Catholic schools are not quite responding well to these growing numbers of Catholic Latinos.
2. High Tuition Fee: The price of tuition fees in Catholic schools is high that this has become a major reason why Latino students are nowhere to find in these institutions. It also adds up to the concern that Latino families don't make much when it comes to their salaries. They'd rather enroll their kids in their nearest public schools.
3. Lost In Translation: According to NCBI, language is another problem with Catholic schools since only a few of their staff are Hispanics. This makes them harder to cater and communicate with Latino parents who are thinking of enrolling in their school. It was reported that only 17 percent of their staff know how to speak in Spanish. That figure contributes a lot to why they are losing students.
These are the reasons why you won't see a lot of Latino students in Catholic schools. If you're a parent, would you consider enrolling your child at a Catholic school?
