Women with mutated BRCA1 gene like Angelina Jolie's can affect female fertility by producing fewer eggs in the ovaries. This is the same genetic code that makes women at higher risk of having breast and ovarian cancer, as per experts.
Cancer Cause
According to Daily Mail, women who are in their 30s to 40s might have a hard to conceive when they have BRCA1 gene. Even fertility treatments can be useless as the affected hormone will stop the IVF drug to work accurately.
Women who have the damaged genes, called BRCA1 and BRCA2, radically increased the chance of having breast, ovarian and Fallopian tube cancers. According to a National Cancer Institute analysis, 55 percent to 65 percent of women with BRCA1 mutation and 45 percent with BRCA2 mutation are likely to develop breast cancer at the age of 70.
Avoiding Cancer
It has been known that cancers are hard to find while it's on its early stage. Hence, women who are detected with BRCA1 mutation and BRCA2 mutation are recommended to have children at an early age. Also, women who have BRCA1 mutation and BRCA2 mutation are advised to remove their ovaries and Fallopian tubes when they reach the age of 40, like what Angelina Jolie did, Medical News Today reported.
Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)
However, Prof. Kelly-Anne Phillips, a consultant medical oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in East Melbourne, Australia, along with an international group of researchers, said that a lot of study should further be performed to know the real effects of AMH and BRCA1 mutation and BRCA2 mutation. The result of the analysts study might "shed new light on mechanisms of age-related fertility decline, the most common indication for assisted reproduction treatment," they explained.
