Study: Obesity Links To 11 Types Of Cancer Including Stomach Cancer

NBCNews reported that alcohol, processed meat and obesity are all linked to stomach cancer. Aside from this, smoking, consuming food preserved with salt and infected with Helicobacter pylori are other causes.

Consuming three or more alcoholic drinks per day increases one's cancer risk. Eating 1.8 ounces of processed meat daily raises one' cancer risk by 18 percent. Meanwhile, smoking accounts to about 11 percent of stomach cancer.

"Obesity is now linked to 11 types of cancer and we want Americans to know there are steps everyone can take for cancer prevention and better health, like eating more vegetables, beans, fruits and other plant foods along with squeezing in a few more steps every day," said Alice Bender of the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR).

Per the reports, stomach cancer is a major killer and the fifth common cancer in the world. In the United States, 21,000 people suffered from gastric cancer and almost 11,000 die due to it every year.

Details Of The Study

According to Fortune, the report analyzed 89 studies about stomach cancer, diet, physical activity and weight. It is the first comprehensive review of existing literature since 2007. It involved about 17.5 million adults, 77,000 of whom were diagnosed with stomach cancer.

More than a third of Americans are obese and another third are overweight. There are 34,000 new cancer cases in men and 50,500 in women, which are all due to obesity.
