Artificial Intelligence: Bill Gates Shares How ‘Personalized Learning’ Can Revolutionize Education

Virtual reality and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming powerful tools needed to revolutionize education. Experts suggest the use of technology, with the integration of the ever-evolving cyber tools, will unify education and research environment and network.

Despite the threat of artificial intelligence to rise up against humans and destroy humanity within decades, AI continues to prove its usefulness to mankind. Recently, artificial intelligence makes headlines for having a potential to provide solutions to various global issues such as poaching, illegal logging, cyber-attacks, in aiding cancer diagnosis and in education.

Artificial Intelligence In Classrooms

The rise of technology has changed the way students communicate and entertain themselves. Unfortunately, pervading classrooms, where students spend much of their time in, with technology is not enough to implement the kind of changes that are desperately needed in schools, colleges and universities nationwide.

Luckily, Microsoft cofounder and the world's richest man Bill Gates is planning to change education by developing an artificial intelligence-driven field called "personalized learning." According to CNBC, Gates has invested more than $240 million to the project via the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

What Is Personalized Learning?

Personalized learning is a diffuse set of initiatives helmed mostly by private companies. It aims to develop software that generates individualized lesson plans based on student's performance.

In this artificial intelligence-driven program called personalized learning, Teachers will still play a vital role in the classroom but they will do less lecturing and focus more on one-on-one coaching, The Verge reveals. By using data and technology to customize a self-paced education, teachers will coach students until they mastered a certain subject.

Bill Gates And Personalized Learning

Speaking at the ASU GSV Summit, a three-day education technology conference in San Diego last week, Bill Gates encouraged educators, investors and tech companies to make more efforts in investing time and money on technology. During his speech, Gates emphasized investing in artificial intelligence-driven educational programs could personalize the school experience and eliminate the equity gap.

"I'm a big believer in the potential of technology," Gates said, as per The San Diego Union-Tribune. "Success will come to the innovators who look at this new majority. We want to work with you to close the equity gap in American education."

Gates, however, emphasized the significant factor in accelerating this kind of artificial intelligence-driven innovation in education technology is "deeper engagement with teachers." Despite there's a bit difference to the role of teachers in personalized learning classrooms, Gates stressed the importance of teachers.

"Teachers want to get in and help individual students, and so I don't think it's really a different skill set," Gates told Casey Newton of The Verge. "Eventually the schools of education will expose people to these new learning models as they get really pervasive."

Impact Of Artificial Intelligence In Classrooms

Artificial intelligence is gradually infused in classrooms nowadays and experts are on the brink of steering AI into higher education in new, bold ways. As said by Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech, the modernized form of artificial intelligence will become ubiquitous, more effective, efficient and interdisciplinary on higher education.
