Bad news for gamers eager to get their hands on a new generation PlayStation console as Sony apparently has no plans of releasing a PS5. A game developer revealed that the company is no longer sure that it should be developed and hinted that the tech giant is more interested in coming out with a PS4 upgrade. Insiders say this is the PS4 Neo.
Speaking on the online show "Game Informer," Lorne Lanning, creator of the game series "Oddworld," revealed that he had a talk with Sony president Shuhei Yoshida about the PS5. When he asked Yoshida about it, the executive clarified that the idea remains a speculation.
PlayStation 5's Fate Remains Unknown
"I said, 'Well, what does the PlayStation 5 look like?' And he said, 'You mean if...' I said, 'Are you willing to say that on a stage?' and he said, 'Yeah, it's an if,'" related Lanning.
Lanning went on to reveal that with the unclear answer, Yoshida seemed to suggest that Sony is evaluating the future of console hardware. For the past decade, game consoles usually last seven years before a new version comes along.
However, that's no longer true in recent times as technology is progressing at a faster pace. "[It] is becoming I think less and less viable even though the generations of platforms are lasting longer," Lorne Lanning said, per Techno Buffalo.
PS5 Out, PS4 Neo In
The news comes as Sony is reportedly coming out with an upgraded version of the PS4. The PS4 Neo is not a next-generation console, but it will have a few hardware improvements that's been missing from the current PlayStation.
Specifically, it will have the capacity to render games better and faster, particularly for those that have virtual reality features. While Sony has yet to make any official announcement regarding PS4 Neo, a GameStop and AMD executives have hinted that an upgraded console is coming, Parent Herald previously reported.
Eager gamers are expecting Sony will announce the PS4 Neo in the last quarter of the year. Given this fact, observers note it would no longer be practical for Sony to release PS5 so close to the release of PS4 Neo.
PS4 Neo: Ready By October?
Giant Bomb reports that Sony has started requiring its developers to ensure that games for release beginning October 2016 should be able to support both the PS4 and PS4 Neo. On the other hand, games shipped out in September should have a downloadable patch ready.
However, this doesn't mean that the PS4 Neo would be available at stores by October. It's only looking like Sony is preparing its gamers for a transition. Watch Lanning in his talk with "Game Informer" in the video below:
