Burger King creates an even bigger rival to McDonald's Big Mac

Burger King continues to attack McDonald's, its biggest rival, by creating an even bigger alternative to the latter's infamous Big Mac, Businessweek reports.

Although the company did not specify just how much extra meat will be added to their latest product, the fast food chain said it will have 0.8 ounces more beef than the Big Mac.

"The size of the former Big King patties is proprietary," said one of Burger King's representatives.

Just recently, Burger King shifted its menu strategy by providing fewer but more impactful launches. Burger King's newest product, Big King, will be made available this week for $3.69. It will be made with two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and three layers of sesame seed bun, according to ABC News.

Alex Macedo, brand president for North America, confirmed that Burger King will also focus on developing breakfast and chicken items.

Some of their recent launches have included the familiar Rib Sandwich, inspired by the McRib, and their chipotle chicken wrap, which was only available for a limited time around the same time the McWrap was introduced. Burger King may have also ripped off McDonald's Sausage McMuffin by creating their own version of the sausage, egg and cheese breakfast.

Burger industry expert Scott Hume told ABC that the Mac is itself a homage to the Big Boy burger that was introduced in 1937 by the original Bob of Bob's Big Boy.

Imitation, he explained, is the name of the game in the fast food industry. A few years ago, Hume says, "Everybody, at about the same time, had little bit-sized pieces of chicken. They just called them different things - popcorn chicken, McBites, chicken-bites, and so on. Is that copycatting? I don't think so."
