Brain-dead teen shows signs of improvement, mom says

The mother of a 13-year-old girl who was declared brain-dead claims that she's seeing improvements in her daughter's condition.

Jahi McMath was previously declared brain-dead following complications from her sleep apnea surgery, with medical experts stating that the girl had no hope of revival.

However, McMath's family, led by her mother, Nailah Winkfield, have refused to give up quite so easily. On Wednesday, Winkfield posted a letter on Facebook and Twitter saying she believes her daughter is doing better since she was removed from Children's Hospital Oakland last month and taken to an undisclosed facility.

"Despite what people say about my daughter being dead and how I must be ignorant not to get that, I can tell you that she is much better physically since she has left Children's Hospital and I see changes that give me hope," Winkfield said in a letter.

Although she did not disclose any information about the actual status of McMath's health or where exactly she is at the moment, her mother confirmed that the girl is still being fed through tubes and remains on a ventilator.

Winkfield also expressed gratitude for all the emotional and financial support she says she's received from people all over the world.

The family's attorney, Christopher Dolan, stressed that the letter was intended for those who are supporting Jahi and her entire family.

"[Winkfield] is a good woman who has retreated to do what she wanted to do from the beginning: care for her daughter," he told Yahoo News. "This letter is not an invitation to reopen a wound but a way of saying that she remains grateful for everyone who helped her get her daughter away from Children's Hospital Oakland to a place of safety and care."
