'The Punisher' Coming Soon On Netflix

"The Punisher" is set to have his own television series on Netflix, the streaming service announced on Friday. Reprising his role as Frank Castle, "The Walking Dead" cast member Jon Bernthal will be the main star in the upcoming spin-off.

Entertainment Weekly reported that "The Punisher" is Marvel's sixth series in its collaboration with Netflix and Marvel Television. Other anticipated TV shows are "Iron Fist," "Luke Cage" and "The Defenders."

It was added in the same report that rumors on this Punisher spin-off surfaced last summer. Now that the news has been confirmed, producer Steve Lightfoot is said to be the series' showrunner.

"For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn't be more excited to dive into his world," Lightfoot told Rolling Stone. "After watching Jon's performance in Marvel's Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own."

It remains a question of this new series begin on the part where the Daredevil show ended. Rolling Stone said the show may also start with an origin story of the character or address one of "The Punisher's" storylines.

Discussing the story of the upcoming TV show, Time said fans should expect the Punisher to seek revenge just like Daredevil. It added that unlike Matt Murdock, Castle does not care whatever means he uses to get what he wants.

Marvel fans can, therefore, expect a bloodier series with the addition of "The Punisher." "The Marvel television shows have been much grittier than their big screen counterparts and are only likely to get darker with a Punisher spinoff," added Time.

Hollywood Reporter said the series will also be done in association with ABC Studios. This latest show is now part of Netflix's aim to produce a new original show which will debut every week of the year.
