Tony Awards News & Updates: Musical 'Hamilton' Gets 16 Nominations

Broadway musical hit "Hamilton" has received 16 Tony Awards nominations on Tuesday. The hip-hop special about Alexander Hamilton has reportedly been nominated for every major category.

Fortune reported that the nominations were announced on Tuesday with "Hamilton" getting recognized for categories like best musical and best set design. The Tony Awards night will happen on June 12 and will be broadcasted on CBS.

Based on the official Tony Awards nominees list, "Hamilton" also had nominations for best costume design, best scenic design and best direction. The highest number of nominations this year also beat the 15-nomination record previously held by "The Producers" (2001) and "Billy Elliot" (2009).

The musical's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is also nominated for three awards for "Hamilton" - best book, best original score and best performance by a lead actor in a musical. "It's unbelievable - it's absolutely humbling and incredible," Miranda told The New York Times.

Lin-Manuel Miranda further explained that though the show is about the founding father, it also speaks about America and its aspirations. "Hamilton" made use of contemporary music and a powerful cast to highlight the importance of the founding generation of the country.

"When I had the idea, I did say to myself, 'I can't believe no one's done this yet,'" added Miranda. "Hamilton's life was uniquely suited to the things that are my strengths: hip-hop and musical-theater storytelling."

"Hamilton," which opened in August last year, has become a big hit with sold-out tickets for months. Fortune said that scalpers earned hundreds of dollars since many people really wanted to see the show.

The "Hamilton" official website revealed that the show has play dates until January 2017. Lottery tickets are available for $10, standard tickets at $139 and premium tickets for $549. "Hamilton" runs for two hours and 45 minutes. It also includes a 15-minute intermission.
