Hillary Clinton the Democratic frontrunner is facing a controversy about the rape meme circulating online. According to the rape meme, the presidential aspirant volunteered to defend a rape suspect, freed the rapist and laughed about the whole thing.
Rape Meme Puts Hillary Clinton In The Bad Light
According to Shopes.com, there is a photo circulating online featuring a girl in tears. It was captioned with a short story. According to it, a 42-year old man raped a 12-year-old girl and Hillary Clinton volunteered to be his lawyer.
In the court, Hillary reportedly told the judge that the victim just made up the story because she enjoyed fantasizing older men. The now-presidential candidate successfully freed the rapist and she even laughed about the outcome of the case because she is aware that he is guilty.
"Hillary Clinton is an advocate for rapists. Not for women or children," the photo ended with this statement. There is a disclaimer suggesting that the story is true, but the photo of the victim is not factual.
The Truth About Hillary Clinton's Rape Meme
The rape case is true, but the claims in the viral meme were only partially accurate. According to PolitiFact, Hillary Clinton did not volunteer, the judge assigned her that controversial case. Judge Maupin Cumming found Clinton on a list of lawyers who represent low-income clients. Since the client wanted a female lawyer, Cumming picked Clinton.
Hillary Clinton doesn't want to be involved and even asked to be relieved from the case. In Clinton's "Living History" autobiography she wrote Washington County prosecutor Mahlon Gibson her intention of dropping her involvement in the case, but he reminder her she can't refuse the judge's request.
"Hillary told me she didn't want to take that case. She made that very clear," Gibson told Newsday in 2008. "I don't want to represent this guy. I just can't stand this. I don't want to get involved. Can you get me off?"
As for the claims that Hillary Clinton knows that her client was guilty and laughed about freeing him, there is no truth to it. In the recording, Clinton disclosed that she had her client took a lie detector test and polygraph and he passed to which Clinton laughed and said, "which forever destroyed my faith in polygraphs." She laughed not on the case but in the results of the polygraphs.
In addition, the rapist ultimately pleaded guilty and spent years behind bars. It is not true that Clinton freed him. However, they asked for a plea bargain.
Although there were differences in Hillary Clinton's statement on her 1980 interview and in her autobiography about the case, the facts presented in the rape meme were exaggerated and not completely true.
