Beat Egg Allergies with Baked Eggs

Cakes and Breads prepared with eggs no longer pose health risks to children with egg allergies as according to a new study, hen's eggs, when baked are safe for children with egg allergies.

The findings presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) found more than half of the children, allergic to eggs and egg related products able to tolerate hen's eggs when baked at 350 degrees and more likely to build up immunity to the allergy.

Children were able to tolerate between two and five eggs when baked at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

"More than half of egg allergic children can tolerate hen's eggs when they are baked at 350 degrees in products such as cakes and breads," lead study author and allergist Rushani Saltzman, said in a news release . "Dietary introduction of baked egg by an allergist can broaden a child's diet, improve quality of life and likely accelerate the development of an egg tolerance."

Another study presented at the meeting found children more likely to outgrow egg allergies more easily than any other type of allergies.

"Food tolerance was observed in one in four children, with 55 percent outgrowing their egg allergy by age seven," Ruchi Gupta, lead study author and pediatrician, said. "Developing an egg tolerance is the most common for children, followed by milk. A small proportion outgrew shellfish and tree nut allergies."

The findings come at a time when nearly 20 percent of Americans or one in every five adults and children (six percent) have allergies.

Cow's milk, eggs, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat are some common foods that cause allergic reactions among children.

According to an estimate from the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), nearly 1.6 percent of children in the country are affected with egg allergy.

The allergic reaction in the body leads to the production of chemicals like histamine that causes many health problems like wheezing, trouble breathing, coughing, hives, swelling, stomach ache, tightness and a drop in blood pressure.
