An Australian team observed three dog owners, who were separated from their dogs but later reunited. Both humans and dogs were fitted with heart monitors to check how the reunion will affect their hearts.

The researchers initially expected to see lower heart rates. However, they were surprised that apart from their expectation, the heart rates of the dog owners and their pets mirrored so closely.

"This project is a really good illustration of what most owners experience every night when they come home from work and are reunited with their companion," Mia explained. "This kind of effect of experiencing a lowered heart rate makes a significant difference to our overall wellbeing."
