Transgender Bathroom Law News & Updates: Justice Department Suing North Carolina Over Bathroom Law

North Carolina has received a lot of backlash for introducing and passing the transgender bathroom law. But now, North Carolina will face an even bigger opposition as the U.S. Justice Department files a lawsuit against the state to stop the implementation of the controversial transgender bathroom law.

The transgender bathroom law -- also called House Bill 2, -- bans transgenders from entering and using public restrooms that do not match their biological sex. This bill has received condemnation from many citizens, civil rights groups, celebrities, politicians, businesses and the LGBT community.

"It was not so very long ago that states, including North Carolina, had other signs above restrooms, water fountains, and on public accommodations, keeping people out based on a distinction without a difference," Attorney General Loretta Lynch told CNN. "We've moved beyond those dark days."

The U.S. Justice Department wants North Carolina to stop the implementation of the transgender bathroom law in order to avoid discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. The Justice Department also gave a warning that it will limit federal funding for the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety if the House Bill 2 will be implemented in the state.

Some of the musicians that have cancelled concerts in North Carolina over the transgender bathroom law are Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato. Deutsche Bank and PayPal have also cancelled their plans of expansion in the state.

However, there are some groups that praise and support the transgender bathroom law. These groups include the Family Research Council, right-wing conservative Christians and some religious leaders, according to Think Progress. North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory has recently stated that he will announce his decision regarding the transgender bathroom law on Monday, Fox News reports.
