Recent “X-Men” news revealed that the next movie will be set in the 1990s. This can mean that the mutant heroes may showcase a new set of hypercolor costumes.
A New "X-Men" In A 1990s Setting
Producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that the next “X-Men” film will be set in the ‘90s. According to ComingSoon, “X-Men: First Class” in 2011 was set in the 1960s. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in 2014 was set in the 1970s.
The upcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse” was set in the 1980s. It would be logical that the next installation would be set a decade apart from the previous film.
CNet noted that fans are already excited about the idea of hypercolor costumed X-Men characters. Some of the fan-predicted features include huge cellphones that were widespread in the 90s, blossom hats, roller skates, fanny packs, hammer pants, t-shirts with colorful patterns, body glitters, songs from the decade, blocky computers and popular video games in the era. There may even be several products pertaining to the time period.
New Mutants On The Next "X-Men" Movie?
The “X-Men” became widely popular in the 1990s after Jim Lee introduced various design changes to the comic book characters. It is still uncertain whether Kinberg was referring to the next “X-Men” movie per se, or the “New Mutants” feature, which is currently in the works, headed by director Josh Boone.
The 1990s era would be significant in the development of the movie franchise, considering how the X-Men truly blossomed with the introduction of the vibrant costumes and unique character personalities. The past “X-Men” movies saw drastic changes from the TV and comic versions.
So the 90s theme will most likely feature a return to the original costumes that fans loved, particularly Wolverine’s cowl, Cyclops’ blue and yellow suit, Rogue’s green and yellow ensemble. Of course, there's also Professor X’s signature golden chair.
The upcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse” has been featuring new characters getting close to their original sketched forms, such as Apocalypse, Storm, Psylocke and Archangel, with positive comments from fans. The trend may continue in future films, inspired by the colorful 1990s era.
The upcoming “New Mutants” movie will cover a new group of teenagers with special powers, namely Cannonball, Dani Moonstar, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, Magik and Warlock. There are also talks that Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Professor X (James McAvoy) will also appear in the new film.
In the meantime, “X-Men: Apocalypse” will launch on May 19, 2016. Stay tuned for more updates on the next "X-Men" movie.
