The recommended age range for getting pregnant and giving birth is late 20's and early 30's. However, a 72-year-old woman from India recently gave birth for the first time.
Daljinder Kaur and her 79-year-old husband have been married for 46 years but have no children before her miraculous baby at the age of 72. So how was this made possible?
The couple underwent in-vitro fertilization in order to conceive a baby. "Our track record handling IVF in older women has been fairly good, but not everyone is fit to conceive," National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Center owner and embryologist Dr. Anurag Bishnoi told Medical Daily. "In her case, she looked visibly frail too, so I had to refer her to a cardiologist to get clearance for the procedure and a battery of other tests to ascertain fitness levels."
The first attempt and second attempt for conceiving through in vitro fertilization failed for Kaur and her husband. However, the third attempt became successful.
Kaur conceived a baby using the couple's very own egg and sperm for the in vitro fertilization. She gave birth to a baby who only weighed 4.4 pounds at birth but the newborn is now doing well.
In vitro fertilization is a procedure for treating fertility problems of couples. It involves getting mature eggs from a woman's ovary and fertilized by a man's healthy sperm in a laboratory, Mayo Clinic shares. The fertilized egg will then be implanted in the woman's uterus.
