Being highly sensitive is not a burden. It is one child temperament that you must be able to deal with lest you run the risk of leaving your child feeling all alone. Here are the five things that your highly sensitive child needs.
Accept them.
Highly sensitive children need you to love them for who they are. Try to understand that they feel more deeply when it comes to certain matters compared to the rest of the population, said Huffington Post.
Children who are highly sensitive don't decide what they feel because if they do, then they surely wouldn't want to become highly sensitive. Sometimes, even if they appear to have gotten their feelings under control, it doesn't exactly mean they're already okay. What's left is to accept and understand they are. An ounce of patience always works.
Listen to your heart as a parent.
Experts may say this and that but it's your heart that will tell you what's good for your highly sensitive child. Those experts who only spent one hour with your child are often quick to call them as bipolar or somebody with a mental illness. Instead of listening to these experts who barely know your child, it is best to listen to your own heart.
Give compassion.
Children who are highly sensitive would need your compassion. They wouldn't be looking for it from another entity but more from their parents. When you see them with compassion, it will help them see what you want them to see.
Allow them to engage in group activities.
In school, try to encourage them to join group activities. This will allow them to interact with others and little by little, take away that highly sensitive feeling. If they focus on what they can do rather than what they feel, they might just grow out of it in time.
On the other hand, if they don't feel like joining school activities, don't push them. Just understand that they are going through certain things that only they can fathom.
Build schedules.
According to Happy Sensitive Kids, creating schedules will help highly sensitive children. By sticking to a particular schedule, they are inclined to stick to a pattern and will prevent the building of any untoward feelings.
In all these, patience will play a huge role. When you are patient enough in dealing with your highly sensitive child, he will make it through every single day.
