Now that "The Good Wife" has bowed out of television, CBS is reportedly coming up with "The Good Wife" spinoff. It will potentially star Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo, who will reprise their roles as power lawyers Diane Lockhart and Lucca Quinn. Could Carrie Preston, who plays kooky lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni, join too?
The Hollywood Reporter cites that the deal is not yet locked, so it's still not clear on what the story's path will follow. But CBS is already working it out with "The Good Wife" creators Robert and Michelle King. The initial plan is that the Kings are going to write the first episode of the spinoff, but they will not become the showrunners. Additionally, the new show will not be aired by CBS in the traditional medium.
"The Good Wife" Spinoff Going Digital
Instead, CBS is planning to put "The Good Wife" spinoff in its CBS All Access subscription service for digital watchers who prefer to follow TV shows online and not on television. All Access has set its first new original series content with the development of the "Star Trek" reboot, which will debut on the streaming site in January 2017, per a previous Parent Herald report.
CBS is beefing up its All Access content for next year to compete with other streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. So if everything works out, "The Good Wife" spinoff should follow in "Star Trek's" lead and be ready by early 2017.
"The Good Wife" Stars Ready For Spinoff
TV Line reports that despite ongoing negotiations, Christine Baranski has not been accepting other TV jobs after the end of "The Good Wife" knowing that a spinoff is on the table. On the other hand, Cush Jumbo is equally excited about the possibility of playing her character again.
"Please, I would jump-obviously-on that train," she said per E! Online. "I would love for that to happen. But I'm kind of the last one in, so I have to just kind of wait to see what happens." Cush Jumbo's character was only added in "The Good Wife" in Season 7.
Meanwhile, Carrie Preston, who had a recurring role in "The Good Wife" for several seasons, was already tied to the comedy show "Crowded" before the spinoff talks took place. But "Crowded" has just been cancelled on NBC, which means Preston's calendar could be free. The creators have originally considered her spinoff story per another E! Online report. Will CBS consider taking her too?
What do you think "The Good Wife" fans? Will you follow the spinoff on CBS All-Access?
