As early as now, John Boyega shuts all hopes of a Finn and Rey romance in Star Wars Episode VIII. Sorry shippers, but it's time to move on and be excited for more realistic news, like Boyega assuring fans that the film will be darker and bigger than its predecessor, The Force Awakens.
Finn and Rey played by Daisy Ridley and John Boyega respectively were new characters introduced in the Disney production of the 7th film of the Star Wars series. Finn plays a stormtrooper that meets Rey the scavenger. As friends, they share a lot of camera time together. With hand-holding and kissing on the forehead, many thought of these as signs of a budding romance, as per Slash Film.
Star Wars The Force Awakens ends without anything developing between the two aside from friendship, so it got fans thinking if producers would push for a romance on Star Wars Episode VIII. In a Variety interview with John Boyega, he breaks all make-up romantic plots between Rey and Finn, saying that the two are only friends.
"I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Daisy and I, we’re friends," John Boyega said, "Yes, Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a stormtrooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go."
True enough, MTV News ships a different romantic pairing, one romance that more fans are talking about. Since December of last year, about a hundred slash fan fiction novels had been written about Finn, and another new character, Poe, who is a male Resistance Pilot.
MTV News talks about both characters escaping the First Order together, losing each other after and reuniting at Resistance headquarters with a bromance moment of staring and shoulder-nudging. Screen Crush agrees as John Boyega did not really say anything about the possible romance between Finn and Poe.
Obviously, all of us don't know much details yet about Star Wars Episode VIII. But John Boyega hints on Rian Johnson's direction compared to J.J. Abrams.
"Rian Johnson is great. It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: “How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?'” But it’s crazy," John Boyega said to Variety.
Star Wars fans are definitely going crazy while waiting for Episode VIII to hit cinemas on December 2017. Will Rian Johnson live up to the expectation and deliver a film bigger and darker than J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens? There's only one way to find out: be patient, wait for about 19 months and if you survive, you get your questions answered.
