During the celebration of Top Gun Day on Monday, fans looked back on one of the stars of the 1980s hit movie starring Tom Cruise. Three decades after the movie was shown, fans observed that leading lady Kelly McGillis is now "unrecognizable."
Mirror reported that Cruise and other cast members -- Tim Robbins and Val Kilmer -- maintained their looks but it was not the same for the 58-year-old actress who played the role of Charlotte Blackwood. It was noted that she appeared in movies and television shows which did not make a lot of noise after "Top Gun" and now sports a short hair and wears thick glasses.
Raising two kids
The same report added that after she starred in the hit 1986 movie, McGillis had two children with husband Fred Tillman. She, later on, admitted that she was gay then married her partner Melanie Leis in 2010.
As per Mirror, McGillis also appeared in "The Accused" with actress Jodie Foster after "Top Gun" but did not earn any nomination for her role. She then reportedly focused on theater and appeared in plays like the Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice.
Movie and TV appearances
Entertainment Weekly also noted that she appeared in other movies like "Ground Control" in 1998, "At First Sight" in 1999 and "The Monkey's Mask" in 2000. She also made appearances in some episodes of the famous lesbian TV series The L Word as Colonel Gillian Davis.
But aside from her life as an actress, McGillis shared with Yahoo that she struggled with her identity and drugs for a few years before deciding to fix her life and get sober. She moved with Leis to New Jersey where she worked as a counselor of drug addicts in a rehab facility in their locality. The actress also volunteered to visit prisoners in a detention facility in the state.
