Who says that lawyers are boring? These three Manhattan lawyers have made the legal profession as exciting as it could be. They have opted to engage in activities that may not be anywhere law-related yet somehow, it helped sharpen their courtroom skills.
Three Adventurous Lawyers
One of these Manhattan lawyers is Eliza Orlins. She is a lovely public defender who has competed in "Survivor" for two seasons. The other attorney is Liam Malanaphy, who takes magician gigs during weekends. For Antonia Messina, wearing the elaborate Flamenco dancer dresses is common after office hours.
These three adventurous counsels have shown the world that being a lawyer does not prohibit one from seeking other occupations, even if they are not law-related. They have even attributed some of the skills they have learned from their non-law related occupations as having contributed in honing their lawyerly abilities.
Defending Accused
According to New York Post, Malanaphy has recently defended a pimp who was charged with beating up hookers. Malanaphy said that, "So much of what we do in court is performance." While he has a private criminal practice, he dons a magician's costume every weekend and spends time entertaining kids at birthday parties.
The "Survivor" girl, Orlins, according to Headline-News has competed in two "Survivor" series. Orlins said that in 2007, she momentarily stopped from law school to film "Survivor Micronesia: Fans vs. Favorites." She also competed on "Survivor: Vanuatu" in 2004 where she made it to the final four.
Dealing With Difficult People
According to Orlins, her "Survivor" experience taught her how to deal with difficult people. She further elaborated by saying that sometimes there's a need to work with people you don't like. You just have to work together.
Antonia Messina who has been in the practice of law for more than two decades fell in love with Flamenco. So while she was studying law, she joined a Flamenco dance company. For Messina, Flamenco was a "counterpoint to the extreme stress" of being a lawyer. Aside from being active in the practice, she also owns Viva Flamenco NJ.
Malanaphy, Orlins and Messina are only a few of the lawyers who engage themselves in adventurous stuff other than lawyering for clients in court. These adventures they do simply keeps them sane while facing the jury, the judge and the courtroom every single day.
