Millions of children do not have the resources to go to school and get a proper education. Many children's education and future have also been disturbed by wars, conflicts and natural disasters. Fortunately, the UN World Humanitarian Summit on May 23-24 will provide an opportunity for nations, companies and philanthropists to join forces and raise funds to help those children get the education they deserve.
The huge fundraising event -- called the Education Cannot Wait fund -- will be launched at the two-day UN World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey. "It is designed to cater the needs of 30 million displaced girls and boys, the largest population of girls and boys uprooted since 1945 -- 20 million of whom have no choice at the moment and are unable to go to school," UN Special Envoy Gordon Brown stated via ICVA.
So what makes Education Cannot Wait unique from other fundraising events? According to Brown, this education fund is both an aid for development and for humanitarian purposes as well.
Most humanitarian funds are focused on giving food and shelter to people in need. In the case of Education Cannot Wait, the goal of the fund is not for emergency necessities but for the long term needs of the children -- which is a proper education for up to five years.
Brown explained that children with no access to proper education experience great pain and suffering due to the absence of hope for the future. The goal of Education Cannot Wait during the UN World Humanitarian Summit is to recruit at least 100 major donors from governments, international agencies, companies, corporations and philanthropic organizations.
"The right to an education is vital for the economic, social and cultural development of all societies," Humanium explains. Hopefully, the UN World Humanitarian Summit's Education Cannot Wait fund will be able to make a big difference for the millions of children in great need.
