Teenagers Abuse Use Of Prescription Drugs: What Parents Can Do

Prescription drugs are usually abused by teenagers without them knowing it. Parents have now expressed concern about this issue and fear that this will affect the future of their children.

Medical Daily said that those who do not monitor their use of prescription drugs are people dealing with chronic pain. It noted that these individuals are forced to take these meds because pain has become an inconvenience for their day-to-day living.

A recent study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine explained that patients who use these drugs to treat pain usually test positive for illegal drugs and abuse of these medications. One major reason being considered for this turnout is the self-medication of patients.

Self-treatment

Many who experience chronic pain turn to self-treatment and end up dependent on prescription drugs for their discomfort. "Chronic pain and pain-related dysfunction were the norm for primary care patients who screened positive for drug use," disclosed the study.

The findings of this research are disturbing and parents are encouraged to intervene for the sake of their kids. WLTX 19 said that moms and dads need to regularly talk with their children.

If there is any threat of alcohol and drug use/abuse, parents would be able to prevent it with constant communication. The same report explained that these evils are just around the corner, waiting for the perfect time to lure the young ones.

Be extra vigilant

Social worker Jenniffer Weller-White told WLTX 19 that telling kids to stay away from drugs may not be enough to keep them out of danger. "If we just want to go with this old school 'just say no' train of thought, I don't know that that's realistic" she added.

Parents need to be vigilant with the peers and the environment of their children. It is always helpful to be extra careful than be sorry in the end.
