‘Outlander’ Season 2 News & Updates: How ‘Outlander’ Steers Away From TV Sex And Does Real Thing

There are many lovemaking scenes in the TV series "Outlander," which is based on the book of the same title. Its author says the act is an integral part of the protagonists Jamie and Claire's relationship. But since the drama series is not all about s**, the showrunner shared with Variety how it veers away the clichés of lovemaking on television.

The "Real Lovemaking"

TV sex seems to have been following a certain formula -- a candlelit scene, a flowing curtain, a woman arching her back. But "Outlander" wants to be different. The executive producer of Starz' drama, Ronald D. Moore, revealed to Variety what he told "Outlander" directors.

"'We're not doing TV sex. TV sex is not real sex. No one has sex like that.' And they would all laugh and say, 'Yeah, that's true. So what do you want to do?' I said, 'Just do it like the real deal,'" Moore said.

Every lovemaking scene would have to be realistic and an integral part of the story. In the Jamie and Claire's wedding episode, Moore even had women wrote the script (executive producer Anne Kenney) and direct the production (Anna Foerster).

"I just felt, for whatever reason, a woman would approach the scene differently emotionally and intuitively, and probably differently visually," Moore told Variety. "It would be more about the meeting of these two people than it would be about eroticism or trying to make it look 'sexy.'"

The Unintentional Impact

With Moore is just trying to be honest and give more truthfulness to the characters' relationships, he said that the show is receiving praises for highlighting the point of view of a woman. He said that probably it's because that part "has been so marginalized" and when you give more voice to women, people see it as a radical move.

"Outlander" is a time-travelling, historical drama series following the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) who found herself back in 1743 where she met her second husband Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). "Outlander" Season 2 airs on Starz at 9 p.m. on Saturdays.
