The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Wednesday that the Schwinn-branded infant bike helmets sold exclusively at Target are potential choking and magnet-ingestion hazards for babies and toddlers. For this reason, a total of 129,000 infant bike helmets will be recalled by Pacific Cycle to prevent any untoward incident.
Pacific Cycle received three reports about the buckle cover of the infant bike helmet coming loose, according to NBC News. This loose buckle cover could potentially choke a toddler and its loose magnet could be accidentally ingested by a child.
The infant bike helmets being recalled -- sold between $18 and $25 -- have the word Schwinn marked on the front of the helmets. These helmets are usually brightly colored with chin strap buckles.
Consumers should immediately stop using these infant bike helmets in order to prevent any accident. They should also contact Pacific Cycle to receive instructions on how to get the free replacement helmet.
If you own this kind of infant bike helmet, you can call Pacific Cycle at 877-56-2261 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST during the weekdays, WRCB TV shares. You can also inquire about replacing your infant bike helmets by sending an email to customerservice@pacific-cycle.com.
Consumers can also contact the company by visiting the website www.schwinnbikes.com, clicking on the Support tab and then the Safety & Recalls tab. You also have the option of replacing your infant bike helmets by visiting www.target.com and clicking on the Product Recall icon.
There are several ways for adults to keep their babies and toddlers safe when riding a bike. Parents should make sure that their baby or toddler can steadily hold his or her head up with a helmet on, the baby bike seat is tamper-proof, the baby's outfit is suitable for the outdoor weather and that you have available snacks and drinks with you for your baby.
